In any list that revolves around a “Clerks” motion picture, a View Askewniverse motion picture, or perhaps any Kevin Smith film in basic, the expressions “cult timeless” and “sleeper hit” are going to come up again and once again. Of all the motion pictures on this list to which those terms might apply, no film embodies them more than “Wet Hot American Summer,” the 2001 all-star, camp (in both senses of the word) comedy that was released to an impressive amount of critical derision but made millions of fans fall in love.
The film follows the counselors and other staff of a New England summer camp on their last couple of days of the season, most of whom spend their valuable remaining hours trying to sleep with whoever will have them. The movie is ridiculous, overstated, and completely tongue-in-cheek, and if you’re on board with that– which we hope you are, Smith fans– then “Wet Hot American Summer seasons” is perfect for you. If you’re not offered from that description, then a sampling of the film’s cast should win you over.
Among others, it features Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, both Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, Elizabeth Banks, David Hyde Pierce, Christopher Meloni, Joe Lo Truglio, and Judah Friedlander– and in case you’re wondering, that impressive cast isn’t squandered, a la the “worst movie of perpetuity,” “Movie 43.”
