January 6, 2023 by Film

The motion pictures that have actually cleared the$1 billion mark at the

box office come from a pretty special club. To date, there are just 51 members. The latest initiate is 2022’s Avatar: The Method of Water, which, as of this writing, is sitting smugly in 13th place with an around the world gross of more than$1.4 billion. It’s an impressive feat for a follow up that hit theaters less than 3 weeks ago– and premiered an excellent 13 years after its predecessor. It will need to make another $1.5 billion or two if it wishes to unseat Avatar (2009) as the ruling champ of this list.

Two other 2022 movies got entry, both of which are also follow-ups to very popular flicks: Top Gun: Maverick, which missed the leading 10 by a single spot; and Jurassic World Dominion, in last place. In reality, the majority of these billion-dollar blockbusters draw from existing intellectual property. There are straight follows up (2019’s Frozen II and 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens); live-action remakes (2019’s The Lion King and 2017’s Beauty and the Monster); adjustments of cherished books (2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, 2012’s The Hobbit); and, naturally, plenty of superhero films.

The significant exceptions to that rule mainly originated from James Cameron, including the aforementioned Avatar movies and 1997’s unsinkable juggernaut Titanic, which earned a sturdy $2.2 billion. Oh, and Disney’s Zootopia likewise makes the list. (It’s hard to beat a talking fox voiced by Jason Bateman.)
