It’s 2022 and the DC universe isn’t getting anymore coherent. After stopping working to leverage the appeal of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy with 2 extremely different and similarly dissentious Superman movies, Warners launched the first of 2 10-year strategies to make a Marvel Studios occur. Unfortunately, after last week’s shakeup, that plan is still evolving (read: they’re starting from scratch, again).
However, prior to Warner Bros. Discovery can continue banishing what remains of the SnyderVerse to the Phantom Zone, they still have a number of motion pictures to discharge. The very first is Black Adam, one of the more complicated additions. Years after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced he would be playing Black Adam before teasing that he would be playing Shazam, he re-announced on Twitter that was Black Adam, Shazam’s nemesis, who has a comparable power set and costume but an attitude problem. Then in 2019, an actual Shazam! movie starring Zachary Levi, who is most certainly not Dwayne Johnson, struck theaters.
However according to Johnson, the connection is more than a series of what-ifs. Speaking With Vanity Fair (by means of The Hollywood Reporter), Johnson said that he was the one that suggested splitting the characters up in the very first place. “When the first draft of the film concerned us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: two origin stories in one movie,” Johnson stated. “Now, that was the objective, so it wasn’t a complete surprise. However when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an amazing disservice.'”
“Everyone idea, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s go make this movie.’ I stated, ‘I really think that you ought to make Shazam!, make that motion picture by itself in the tone that you want. And I think we must separate this as well.'”
G/O Media might get a commission
In January 2017, Johnson posted on Instagram that he just had a “very cool” tactical conference with DC. He composed, “As a difficult core DC fan, to get a genuine sense of the tonal shifts and developments can be found in these future motion pictures has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have actually all been waiting on for a very long time. Hope, optimism & & ENJOYABLE. Even when talking about the most callous villain/anti-hero of perpetuity finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe.” That does sound extremely cool. We’ll figure out whether Black Adam is likewise”really cool”when it hits theaters on October 21.
