Netflix’s ad-supported tier might not play commercials during new movies – Engadget

August 21, 2022 by Film

Netflix’s forthcoming ad-supported tier could consist of programs without commercials. According to Bloomberg, the business does not plan to run advertisements throughout original motion pictures, at least when they first premiere on the platform. In doing so, Netflix reportedly wants to keep its service appealing to prominent filmmakers who might discover the idea of commercials disrupting their stories unattractive.

Content for children might also be without ads. Netflix has supposedly told partners it will not run commercials throughout original kids programming. Some of the business’s present agreements would not enable it to run ads during certified material either. Netflix may feel serving commercials to kids would be more difficulty than it’s worth. In 2019, Google paid $170 million for violating the Children’s Online Personal privacy Security Act after the FTC found YouTube had actually illegally gathered information from kids.

Bloomberg alerts Netflix is still finalizing prepare for its ad-supported tier, and the company’s strategy might change between now and when the service ultimately introduces. On that note, code recently discovered by developer Steve Moser recommended the new tier might also drop support for offline watching. Netflix rapidly reacted to the rumor by mentioning it was still in the “early days of deciding how to release a lower priced, ad-supported option.”
