Hanks’ first ever lead role in a theatrical function (and his very first cooperation with Ron Howard) remained in this wonderful fantasy romance, which in addition to sci-fi love, were all the rage in the ’80s. There was “Mannequin,” “Earth Girls are Easy,” “Starman,” “Unusual Science,” and “The Fly” to name simply a few. In the mermaid motion picture “Splash,” John Sweet plays Hanks’ brother, and the 2 have great chemistry. Dody Goodman, who looks like their eccentric secretary, likewise deserves a mention.
Daryl Hannah as Madison specifies the fish-out-of-water (pun totally planned) character, and the section in which she checks out Bloomingdales and finds out English from a bank of tvs in one afternoon is wonderful. She also presents Hanks a mermaid water fountain that they see in Central Park and has it installed in the middle of his apartment or condo. Eugene Levy plays an entertaining bad guy who stalks Madison, attempting to toss water on her so she reverses into a mermaid– and getting progressively hurt while doing so.
Hanks’ 1980s characters are frequently working-class everyman types (unlike his later professional characters) who face something strange, often with romance sprayed in. If you’re of a particular age, Hanks’ 1980s motion pictures are sentimental home cooking, and they were a terrific start to his profession.
